Overview

In the context of worldwide depletion of fossil fuel resources, and CO2 reduction objectives, Europe must invest in active R&D in order to assess the viability of nuclear fission as a future energy option. Continuing the work initiated by several smaller projects since 1998, FP6 project RAPHAEL addresses the viability and performance of an innovative system for the next generation of power plants, the Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) , which can supply both electricity and heat for industrial applications, including for hydrogen production. Partnership

With 34 partner organisations from 10 countries,  the RAPHAEL consortium groups most of the leading European ‘HTR community’ - comprising nuclear engineering firms, fuel cycle companies, utilities, nuclear research organisations, universities and engineering schools, and a project management professional. See the consortium .
The project's objectives are strongly linked with the strategy outlined by the HTR-Technology Network (HTR-TN). Furthermore, cooperation is organised with international institutions and with the Generation IV Int'l Forum, as well as bilateral interfaces with other FP6 projects... Read more on interactions
